Super El Niño 2026/27: How to Prepare for South Africa's Hotter Summer

A very strong El Niño is already under way, and South Africa's weather service expects above-normal temperatures through summer, with below-normal rainfall more likely towards mid-summer. If cooling, pool heating & cooling or backup power was on your "sometime before summer" list, now is the time to act. This guide covers what has changed since our July update, what the forecast does and doesn't tell us, and which AC Direct deals are live right now.
What has changed since our July update?
Our July El Niño explainer covered a developing event with real uncertainty. Since then the picture has firmed up.
- It is under way.
On 1 September the South African Weather Service (SAWS) said Pacific sea-surface temperatures had crossed the threshold for a very strong El Niño and that the event could become the strongest in living memory, potentially surpassing the damaging 1982/83 and 2015/16 events. At a media briefing on 18 September, SAWS and University of Pretoria scientists said the event was already firmly established and rapidly intensifying.
- The global forecast keeps rising.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says its latest monthly update forecasts a December peak and a near-100% chance that El Niño lasts through February 2027. It expects the key Pacific temperature anomaly to reach about 3.7°C above normal in October to December, which would beat the 2.6°C record set in 2015/16.
- NOAA's odds.
NOAA's 8 October discussion says a strong-to-very-strong El Niño is likely through January to March 2027, with a greater than 83% chance, and puts the chance of a historic event, stronger than any since 1950, at 83% for October to December.
- The local outlook.
SAWS shows an increased chance of below-normal rainfall towards mid-summer and very high probabilities of above-normal temperatures in every forecast period. It has also warned that if the dry conditions arrive, a high frequency of heatwaves is likely to come with them. The regional SADC outlook broadly lines up with SAWS.
What the forecast does and doesn't mean
Seasonal forecasts describe probabilities, not certainties, and the size of an El Niño does not predict how severe its local effects will be. The very strong 1997/98 event brought slightly above-normal rainfall to parts of the summer rainfall region, and scientists at the SAWS briefing noted that the strong 2023/24 event was not the driest on record. Stormy spring weather is consistent with how a strong El Niño begins, but SAWS cautions against blaming individual weather events on it.
South Africa also starts the summer with a buffer: above-normal rainfall in 2025/26 improved dam levels and soil moisture in many areas, and the Agricultural Research Council says conditions are more favourable than before the 2015/16 drought, although that could look different by the end of summer.
Temperature is the more consistent signal. SAWS and SADC both favour above-normal temperatures, and as the report on the WMO update notes, the global temperature spike from an El Niño typically arrives after the event itself has peaked. That is the part that matters most for your aircon, your pool and your electricity bill.
Why prepare early?
Cooling season runs from October to March, and demand typically climbs sharply once the first serious heatwave arrives. That is usually when popular sizes sell through and installation diaries fill up. Sorting it out in October rather than January keeps your options open. The WMO expects the climate impacts to continue well into 2027, so a unit bought now will earn its keep for more than one hot spell. Browse the Get Ready for El Niño deals while they are live.
1. Cool your home before the heat arrives
A hotter summer means more consecutive high-heat days, not just the odd warm afternoon. These wall split and portable aircon delas are in the Get Ready for El Niño range. The size range shows what each model comes in, and the deal price is the starting price.
| Model | Size | Deal price | Was |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haier Real ECO Complete Comfort Combo - INSTALLATION INCLUDED | 9,000 - 24,000 BTU | From R9,398.50 | |
| Midea Portable - Wi-Fi, non-inverter | 12,000 BTU | R5,495 | |
| Hisense Portable - Wi-Fi, non-inverter | 12,000 BTU | R4,849 | |
| Alliance Emerald Inverter - Wi-Fi | 9,000 - 24,000 BTU | From R7,399 | |

| Alliance Black Mirror R32 Inverter - Wi-Fi | 9,000 - 24,000 BTU | From R8,199 | |
| Alliance Portable - non-inverter | 12,000 BTU | R5,799 | |
| Comfee Inverter Midwall Split | 9,000 - 24,000 BTU | From R6,999 | |
| Hisense High Comfort Inverter | 9,000 - 24,000 BTU | From R8,149 |
Why the Haier combo comes first: it bundles the Haier Real ECO inverter (10-year compressor warranty, built-in Wi-Fi) with standard 3 m installation at half price (R1,699.50 instead of R3,399), free AC Direct Warranty Protection worth R1,299 and one complimentary major service. AC Direct lists the combined saving at R2,998.50. Add the R3,399 installation to any other 9,000 BTU deal above and it works out dearer, so for most buyers it is the cheapest way to get a 9,000 - 24,000 BTU inverter fitted and covered.
Getting the size right: a 9,000 BTU wall split typically suits a room of around 18 m². An undersized unit struggles on exactly the days you need it most, so use the Aircon Buying Guide and BTU Calculator before you buy. Renting or living in an apartment? The portables in the table need no permanent installation and move between rooms, which is why they rate well on price. However they do require an exhaust hose to be placed outside a window/door to vent out the hot air. They cover rooms of roughly 23 to 24 m². Treat them as a flexible, budget-friendly fix rather than a whole-home solution.

2. Get your pool ready for a hotter summer
More hot days means more swim days, and pool equipment tends to fail when it is used hardest, so service or upgrade it now. To stretch the swimming season at either end, an inverter pool heat pump is the efficient way, and AC Direct stocks inverter models from brands such as Midea, Alliance, Baracuda and ITS.
Sizing depends on your pool volume, how exposed it is and how many extra months of swimming you want. The Pool Heat Pump Buying Guide walks through it before you commit. 3. Offset the cost of running it all: solar and battery backup
Here is the part most people miss: a long, hot summer means your aircon running harder and longer, and that shows up on your electricity bill. Pairing cooling with solar and battery storage stops that cost compounding all season, and keeps you cool through grid instability and power cuts.
AC Direct stocks Sunsynk and Deye hybrid inverters, lithium batteries and solar panels. If you are weighing up a full system rather than a single component, start with the Solar Buying Guide, then request a free quote so the system is sized for your home and your aircon load. Your early-prep checklist
- Test your existing aircon and pool equipment now. A fault found in October is a quick fix. Found in a January heatwave, it means a queue.
- Size before you buy, and add installation to your order.
Frequently asked questions
How strong is the 2026/27 El Niño expected to be?
NOAA's 8 October discussion says a strong-to-very-strong El Niño is likely through January to March 2027, with a greater than 83% chance, and gives an 83% chance of a historic event in October to December. The WMO's latest update forecasts a December peak, with the key Pacific temperature anomaly reaching about 3.7°C above normal, which would be a record. SAWS says the event could be the strongest in living memory.
Is South Africa guaranteed a drought this summer?
No. SAWS shows an increased chance of below-normal rainfall towards mid-summer, but not every El Niño brings drought, and even very strong events have had different effects in different years. Above-normal temperatures are the more consistent signal in the outlooks.
When should I buy an aircon before summer?
Ideally now, before the first serious heatwave. Cooling demand climbs sharply once the heat arrives, which is usually when popular sizes sell through and installation diaries fill up. AC Direct's Get Ready for El Niño deals are time-limited.
How much does aircon installation cost?
Professional installation of a wall split up to 24,000 BTU is listed at R3,399 with a 3 m copper piping kit. Longer pipe runs or tricky installations can change the final price, so confirm your setup when you order.
Can solar and battery backup run an aircon?
Yes. Inverter aircons are the easier load for a solar and battery system, but the right system size depends on how many units you run and for how many hours. Use the Solar Buying Guide or request a quote so the system is sized for your home.
Will this El Niño cause more heatwaves?
SAWS has said that if the expected below-normal rainfall arrives, a high frequency of heatwaves is likely to come with it, and some could be severe. That is a probability-based forecast, not a guarantee for every location.
